Reimu Hakurei Human - Shrine Maiden This is how Reimu looked in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the first Touhou game played on Windows.

And this is how she looked in Immaterial and Missing Power. Bit of a quality difference, there.

Marisa Kirisame Human - Witch This was Marisa from EoSD. Very... commentable.

And here is Marisa from IaMP. This is truest to the mental image I have of her.

As is obvious, different artists interpret the character differently. Some artists see Marisa as having small breasts, and others see her with even smaller breasts.

Rumia Youkai - Greater Dark Rumia wasn't in IaMP, so this shot of her from EoSD is her only in-game appearance.

Look at the picture on the right! Rumia as a kindergartener! My head just exploded into Pixy Stix.

Cirno Youkai - Greater Ice Fairy Cirno from EoSD. Looks like a little meanie, doesn't she?

Cirno looks like she'd keep you cool on hot summer nights.

Hong Meiling Youkai - Door Guard ACK! Oh wait. It's just China from EoSD.

Whew! That's a lot better. IaMP had good art.

Don't let the docile pictures fool you. Meiling could break you so good.

Patchouli Knowledge Youkai - Witch Patchouli from EoSD. Seeing a pattern yet?

In her IaMP portrait, Patchouli has that, "Go away. I'm reading." look to her.

Quiet, bookworm type.

Sakuya Izayoi Human - Maid Sakuya's EoSD portrait. Either that, or a victim of severe starvation and plastic surgery gone horribly wrong.

Sakuya's expressions in IaMP always make me laugh. She's got the smile that says, "I'm going to kill you... politely."

She'll murder you in the most painful, gruesome way possible. But at least she'll mop up the blood afterward.

Remilia Scarlet Youkai - Vampire Remilia's EoSD portrait. This one actually looks closer to halfway acceptably not terrible.

Remilia's IaMP portrait. Stoker's got nothing on her.

What does this vampire think she's doing? The way she's dressing, you'd think she was trying to be cute or something.

Flandre Scarlet Youkai - Vampire Flandre in EoSD. I think. I can't tell if that red thing at the center of the picture is Flandre's left eye or an apple coming out of her head.

We all just died.

Alice Margatroid Youkai - Witch Alice's portrait from Perfect Cherry Blossom, the second Touhou game for Windows. ZUN was a little better by this point.

Alice in IaMP. Like Marisa, but clean.

This is what we'd call a kouklaphile.

Koakuma Youkai - Lesser Devil

There is no canonical portrait of Koakuma. She appeared in EoSD's fourth stage, but exchanged no dialogue with the player, so she never got a closeup. Poor girl.

Youmu Konpaku Human - Half-ghost Youmu in her first appearance, in Perfect Cherry Blossom. Doesn't she look noble?

Youmu in IaMP. My lame cropping skills gets too little of her in this picture. But I'll just blame it on Youmu's height, so you'll never know.

She must be a lot more buff than she looks, swinging around two swords like that.

Yuyuko Saigyouji Human - Ghost Yuyuko in PCB. There's some cuteness under the surface that doesn't quite make it out.

Yuyuko in IaMP too often has a look of flusterment (yes, that is a word).

You never see her change her clothes, but I guess that ceases to be a problem in her condition.

Chen Youkai - Nekomata Chen from PCB. Aww.

More than a pet, less than a daughter.

Ran Yakumo Youkai - Kitsune Ran from PCB. How intellectual.

These images don't well fit my mental image of Ran. I picture her as more burly, and with less take-crap-from-anybodyitude. But that's my fault for being too lazy to find art that does match my arbitrary perception of her. The above pictures are very good.

Yukari Yakumo Youkai - Grand Boundary Yukari from PCB. If you ever saw her face in game, without watching somebody's replay, then you're a much better person than I.

Yukari in IaMP. Always ready for naptime.

She'll explore your gaps, if you know what I mean. Yes, I did just make that joke. Live with it.

Letty Whiterock Youkai - Grand Winter Letty in PCB. Very motherly. I can see why Cirno likes her.

I wish Letty would come to stay at my place. She could live in my refrigerator and keep my popsicles cold.

Lily White Youkai - Grand Spring Lily appeared old and raggy in Ibunshu. These pictures show how she’s supposed to look, young and pretty and full of spring. Also, Lily is another character who has no in-game portrait.

Phantom Ensemble Youkai - Poltergeist Lunasa Prismriver Merlin Prismriver Lyrica Prismriver The Prismriver Sisters from PCB. Their uniforms are way too loud to be described with less than fifty thousand words.

It’s hard to find good art of the Prismrivers separate from each other. So you get a couple of nice group shots instead.

Suika Ibuki Youkai - Oni Suika from IaMP. Tall and proud, but only when her horns are counted in her height.

No better drinking buddy.

Reisen Udongein Inaba Lunarian - Rabbit Reisen. Her first appearance was in Imperishable Night, the third full Touhou game for Windows. No trait purer than self-confidence.

These images show Reisen as much more moe than I picture anything in Ibunshu looking. I tried to find grizzlier pictures of Reisen for posting here, but I quickly realized that I didn't want any. I'm a sad sucker for cute things.

Eirin Yagokoro Lunarian - Human Eirin from IN. She looks like a genius in no matter other than the procurement and use of hallucinogens.

Beauty and brains in one lovely intimidating package.

Kaguya Houraisan Lunarian - Human Kaguya from IN. Those bangs are imposing.

Of all the Kaguya images I've ever seen, I like this leftmost one the best. It's like, "I bat you with my pretty princess powers!"

Tewi Inaba Youkai - Rabbit Tewi from IN. The cute trickster.

Some Japanese ministry depreciated the character romanized as "wi" back in the 1940's. This means, using the current syllable character set, Tewi's name is properly written as "Tei." However, this is stupid and Tewi sounds cuter.

Keine Kamishirasawa Human - Were-Hakutaku Keine from IN, in human form. Keine in Hakutaku form.

Hmmm. Sweet education. Keine is one of the very few characters who I wouldn't mind seeing in one of those "hot for teacher"-style stories.

Akyu Hieda Human - Child of Miare This is Akyu, who is an unusual character in the Touhouverse. She has no in-game appearances, with or without portrait art. Instead, she appears solely in ZUN's printed works and on the covers of his music albums.

This is a continuity problem, I realize. In every canon and most fanon depictions, Akyu has purple hair. This is not how she appears in Ibunshu. Chalk it up to anime-style girls having to be strangely colored. It's a law or something.

Mokou Huziwara Human - Phoenix Mokou from IN.

Well, this is it. A fire goddess descends, and there could be no better final boss.
